PIC © SAUNIER DUVAL-PRODIR Stage win to Meersman; GC to Cañada In a move reminiscent of the 1990 Tour de Trump, a crack group broke away for most of stage 3 to totally rearrange the overall standings for the 2007 Tour de Georgia. Belgian Gianni Meersman (Discovery Channel) was the surprise winner in Chattanooga, Tennessee, out-sprinting his 12 cohorts for the stage victory. The breakaway group set out just 40 minutes into the stage, as is typical of stage races in Europe. Dramatically, though, the peloton, led by Tinkoff Credit Systems' overall race leader Daniele Contrini, let the 13-man train pile on a 23-minute advantage, thanks to the strong pulls by Health Net presented by Maxxis teammates Tim Johnson and Jeff Louder. Maybe the thought of Thursday's time trial up Lookout Mountain kept the peloton spinning to maintain fresh legs? Louder's effort vaulted his placing to fifth, just three seconds off the leader's jersey. Now, Saunier-Duval's David Cañada has taken over the leader's jersey. At the finish line Cañada said that Thursday's time trial up Lookout Mountain would be a critical factor in the final outcome of the race. "We'll have to go all out," he said. "It's a decisive day. But I'm very happy right now. You always have to enjoy the here and now." Behind Cañada on GC is his teammate, Swiss rider Rubens Bertogliati and CSC's Christian Vande Velde. Six Americans are sitting pretty in the top 10 overall, with the top 13 overall within six minutes of Canada Gracia. The rest of the peloton is 29 minutes-plus behind.
