The section being modified is part of the red route, the trail aimed at intermediate riders. The plan is for jumps, 180 berms and imported rocks to add a bit of "spice".
Alex Maclennan of the Scottish forestry commision says:
"We said right from the start that the re-introduction of parking charges at Glentress would allow more funds to be raised in order to maintain all the facilities in the forests in the Tweed Valley Forest Park for all users."
"We've had brilliant feedback from bikers who have ridden the big descent at Innerleithen so the plan is for some more of that but on a smaller scale to keep it in line with a trail designed for intermediates and upwards. The trailbuilders are taking the principle of a 'zero braking' design so that you can freewheel or pedal as fast as you can through all the jumps and land them cleanly without skidding on the brakes"
Riders heading for Glentress over the coming months should be prepared for diversions via the blue route while the building continues. It should be worth it in the end - we're definitely looking forward to our our next trip north of the border.
