"Gym for cyclists" opens in London

H2 club has bike storage and servicing facilities for Soho commuters

A private members' fitness club for cyclists has opened its doors in Soho, London.

H2 hopes to capitalize on the surge of cycling in the capital by offering a more attractive proposition for the commuting population. An oft-cited reason why people don’t cycle to work is a lack of shower facilities once they get there. The new centre hopes to solve this problem by providing cyclists with everything they need to freshen up - as long as they work nearby.

The club houses a 240-space bike parking area, lockers, sports massage and even a cycle service centre. This means members can drop off their bikes in the morning for a full service and pick it up on the way home. Dry cleaning and laundry facilities are also available.

The gym is also set-up for cyclists, running spinning classes for those wanting a bit more than just their commute.

Alice English, of H2, told BikeRadar that although they've only been open six weeks, they've had a huge response from cycling commuters visiting the club, and already have 400 members.

"It was the idea of a frustrated cycling commuter who loved the freedom of riding to work but being unable to shower once they got there," she added. "We wanted to create a facility that catered for their needs, and we've been delighted with the response."

A second club is set to open in London Wall in mid 2012, while a third club in the Holborn area is in the pipeline. For more information on joining, visit the H2 website.
