Halfords selling £300 Tour de France special

24lb alloy road machine in eye-catching black and yellow

UK retail chain Halfords are selling a limited edition road bike at a bargain price to mark the start of the 2010 Tour de France.

Currently selling for just £300 (reduced from £449.99), we're not sure the Carrera TDF will live up to the company's claims of being a "performance race bike", but it certainly looks good value.

Based around a 6061 aluminium frame with compact geometry and semi-integrated headset, it features 16-speed Shimano 2300 gearing, Tektro 510A dual-pivot brakes, quick-release wheels (alloy hubs and double-wall rims) rolling on 700 x 23C Kenda tyres, and a smattering of own-brand alloy finishing kit.

Claimed weight is 10.9kg (24lb), which is a lot lighter than most bikes at this price. Halfords describe it as "an ideal entry-level road bike aimed at new-to-cycling enthusiasts to celebrate the world’s most famous sporting event".

The price includes a free build, safety check and six-week service, and it only comes in this eye-catching black and yellow colour scheme. For more details, visit www.halfords.com.
