German powerhouse Heinrich Haussler won the final stage of the Tour of Murcia on Sunday afternoon, clinching the bunch sprint for his second victory of the week. Overall victory went to Santos Gonzalez of the newly formed, and Murcia-registered, 3 Molinos Resort team, who finished in the pack behind Haussler.

Gonzalez admitted defending his narrow lead on the short final stage was complicated by strong winds that affected the race. But he and his team-mates hung on to give the former Kelme, ONCE and Phonak rider his first overall success in a stage race. The success also went some way to erasing the bad memories the 3 Molinos Resort team had from the recent Tour of Valencia, which three of their riders were prevented from starting because of elevated red blood cell counts.

The strong winds actually forced the neutralisation of the race 20km from the finish, with racing only recommenced three kilometres from the line in Murcia, making for a rather madcap conclusion. Overall runner-up Ivan Gutierrez explained after the race that he had been intending to attack on the final stage but decided it was safer to stay in the relative shelter of the bunch as the galeforce winds threatened to unseat riders.
