Former Telekom and Gerolsteiner rider Danilo Hondo has made a complaint of reckless and negligent driving against a motorist he alleges drove into him deliberately while he was training with T-Mobile's Matthias Kessler in the South African town of Somerset West on Monday. Hondo, who is currently serving a two-year doping ban, is in South Africa training with members of the T-Mobile team, including Jan Ullrich and Andreas Kloeden.
According to a report in The Cape Times, police spokesperson Elliot Sinyangana said that Hondo initially reported an accident, but on Tuesday night filed a complaint against the motorist.
Tony Brown, a spokesperson for T-Mobile, said a motorist, aged about 60 years, had shouted at Hondo and Kessler as the pair were riding side-by-side. During a a subsequent dispute, according to Brown, the motorist had "purposefully and with intent" driven into Hondo's bicycle, smashing it.
The motorist had told police Hondo and Kessler had sworn at him, and he had accidentally hit Hondo as he was trying to pass the two cyclists. Kessler is alleged by the motorist to have thrown a bicycle at the car, at which point the motorist had driven away.
According to Brown, Hondo was in pain on Tuesday and saw specialists about his whiplash and knee injuries. Hondo was worried they could affect his future earnings, and is to seek legal advice from the team's lawyers on Wednesday.
