T-Mobile team leader Jan Ullrich has been forced to delay his 2006 debut due to a knee complaint. The 32-year-old German was due to make his first race start of the season at next week's Circuit de la Sarthe (April 4-8).

T-Mobile team doctor Andreas Schmid confirmed on Wednesday that Ullrich had irritated an injury to his right knee that had been sustained in early March and would not be fit to start the French stage race. "I was really looking forward to competitive racing," said Ullrich on his team's website. "From now on I will pay more attention to ensure the irritation is fully healed, then I can progressively increase the training load.

"When the knee is better I will start to prepare for the Tour [de France] with my usual discipline."

Ullrich, who is already playing catch-up on rivals such as Ivan Basso, Alexandre Vinokourov and Floyd Landis, is now expected to debut at the Tour of Romandy on April 25.
