Interbike introduces East Coast cyclo-cross festival

Two consumer days added to trade event

Each September, BikeRadar's editors comb the aisles of Interbike's Outdoor Demo to bring you the latest from Boulder Canyon outside Las Vegas. Now two consumer days have been added to OutDoor Demo East, including a cyclo-cross race and festival.

"My hopes are that Outdoor Demo East can grow into an effective trade event that serves the Northeast," National Bicycle Dealer Association's executive director Fred Clements told BikeRadar. "I think it’s important for a lot of dealers to have industry functions near them because not every dealer can travel to Las Vegas for the big show. I think the Outdoor Demo East has a lot of potential.

"The consumer angle also adds a new dimension," he added. "The more we can do to promote cycling and get people excited, the better off we all are. Consumer events play a big role in that."

Traditionally a trade-only event, OutDoor Demo East will now be open to the public on Saturday October 10 and Sunday October 11, 2009 at Roger Williams Park in Providence, Rhode Island. The first two days of OutDoor Demo East, October 8 and 9, will be open to members of the cycling industry only.

"Last year's inaugural OutDoor Demo East gathered dealers and manufacturers for product demos, business deals and networking," said Interbike show director Andy Tompkins. "However, we recognize these groups are just two of the three pieces of the entire cycling community mix. Opening the last two days of OutDoor Demo East for consumer participation is a great way to incorporate that final piece."

The CrossVegas race has been part of Interbike the past two years, so it makes sense for the 'cross-mad East coast to get in on the party as well. It will be called the Providence Cyclo-Cross Festival, a USA Cycling-sanctioned professional and amateur cyclo-cross race event.

Lance Armstrong raced CrossVegas after giving a press conference to announce his return to professional racing.

"Years ago we recognized Roger Williams Park to be, perhaps, the finest cyclo-cross venue in America," said event communication director Richard Fries. "Securing this date, this venue, the support of this fabulous city and this partnership with Interbike, gives us a unique opportunity to create a really spectacular event.

"Get your cowbells ready; this will be fantastic."
