PIC © TINKOFF CREDIT SYSTEMS Tyler Hamilton's Italian teammate, Tinkoff Credit Systems rider Daniele Contrini (ITA), took the bull by the horns at the very first stage of the fifth annual Tour De Georgia, taking advantage of a steady tailwind to solo across the finish line in Macon. In a race packed full of familiar faces from early season injuries (Discovery Channel's George Hincapie and Team CSC's David Zabriskie, two casualties from the Tour of California) and years past (this was Hamilton's first US race since September 2001), it wasn't surprising to see a number of attacks, which were quickly neutralized. Just 53km into the stage, the 33-year-old Contrini and three other riders managed to break away and quickly opened a respectable gap in the chase of an early leader Victor Rapinski (Navigators Insurance), wisely taking advantage of wind direction and the hilly road which didn't play in the hands of the peloton. At the end of the day the Bielorussian was caught by the chasing four about 35km to go, but the main pack was still trailing a couple of minutes behind. Big favorites from the ProTour elite club went all out in front of the peloton, but there were no thoughts of giving up in the breakaway group. The stage ended in a couple of 4.1km-long laps around the city of Macon; there were just two of them left when Contrini ventured to go on his own. The main field was menacingly freight-training its way toward the Tinkoff rider, but it was all too late for them. The Italian snagged victory and the overall race leader's jersey, certainly pleasing the team's management. Tinkoff is back to its winning ways, taking the season's score up to five, notwithstanding the fact that there are just six riders on the line-up for the race, while most of the opponents entered the squads of eight. Stage 2 rolls out of Thomaston for Rome, as the peloton cranks it up again. Tune in Tuesday to see who's victorious after 217km of racing. 5th Annual Tour de Georgia, 2.HC April 16, Stage 1: Peachtree City - Macon (153km) Stage Results 1 Daniele Contrini (Ita, Tinkoff Credit Systems) 03:24:26 2 Douglas Ollerenshaw (USA, Health Net presented by Maxxis) 00:00:21 3 Ben Day (Aus, Navigators Insurance Cycling Team) 00:00:28 4 Ryder Hesjedal (Can, Health Net presented by Maxxis) 00:01:07 5 Ivan Dominguez (Cub, Toyota United Pro Cycling) 6 Karl Menzies (Aus, Health Net presented by Maxxis) 7 Sergey Lagutin (Uzb, Navigators Insurance Cycling Team) 8 Ciaran Power (Irl, Navigators Insurance Cycling Team) 9 Juan Jos Haedo (Arg, Team CSC) 10 Alessandro Proni (Ita, Quick Step -
