With snow and all kinds of other adverse weather conditions affecting swathes of Europe, T-Mobile team leader Jan Ullrich has decided to continue his pre-season training in South Africa, where he spent three weeks before Christmas. Ullrich flew to Cape Town yesterday instead of staying in Tuscany where he usually fine-tunes his pre-season training.
"Currently, winter has Italy in its grip. The snowfall and the freezing cold make it impossible to train efficiently. The risk of catching a cold is much too high," said Ullrich, who thinks that he will be able "to do a more focused and intense training under the South African sun".
Team manager Olaf Ludwig backed Ullrich's decision to fly south. "Jan will be able to train longer and harder at the cape than in Tuscany," he told the T-Mobile website.
Ullrich will be accompanied by team-mates Matthias Kessler, Andreas Kldenand Giuseppe Guerini, as well as T-Mobile DS Rudy Pevenage and Ullrich's personal physiotherapist, Birgit Krohme.
"Despite the long distance there's no time difference to Central Europe. So we don't have to deal with jetlag and go into training straight away," said Pevenage, who is coaching T-Mobile's Tour team.
It has not yet been decided where Ullrich will make his season debut. "For the time being, I will continue to work and stay focused to build up my form," Ullrich said before jetting off.
