Kielder to host stage of Saab Solomon Avalanche Trophy 2008

By Matthew Cole

Kielder Forest in Northumberland will host the second leg of the Saab Salomon Avalanche Trophy 2008 on May 17 and 18 and the race is expected to attract over 350 professional and amateur riders.

The race will be held on the black and red sections of the new £300,000 Deadwater mountain bike trail, which was unveiled last autumn. Other venues on the Avalanche Trophy circuit include Alpe D’Huez in the French Alps and Brixen in the Italian Tyrolean mountains.

A project of the Kielder Trail Reavers, Kielder Partnership and the Forestry Commission, the Deadwater trail is the highest trail in England, peaking at 2,000 feet (600 metres).

Alex MacLennan, Forestry Commission Recreation and Tourism Manager, said:

“This really is a massive feather in the cap for everyone in Kielder Water and Forest Park. It will bring thousands of people into the area and really put us on the map as a prime European recreational venue.”

There’ll also be trade stands, bike demos, barbeque and loads of other interesting stuff around Kielder Castle during the event weekend.  To find out more call 01434 250209, or head to the Forestry Commission website.
