Kona Mash-Up expanding for 2009

Who can ride Afan's top trails the fastest?

Last year's innaugural Kona Mash-Up was such a success that it's coming back bigger and better in 2009.

The event – which sees riders timed over different sections of trail at Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre in AfanForest, South Wales – has now spawned a twin.

There will be a summer round on 13 June and a winter round on 5 December, with an improved timing system at both events.

Ben Gaby, from title sponsor Kona Bicycles, said: "Last year’s event, even with the hiccups we had, was one of the best we've been involved in. The Mash-Up has a relaxed format which gives racers and riders the chance to put the effort in when necessary, and to enjoy the trails leisurely in-between."

How it works

Racing will take place on White's Level and the July Trail (part of Skyline), mostly on singletrack and downhill sections.

Competitors will have to go through these sections as fast as they can, with their accumulated time determining their overall position.

Riders will also compete against all other riders (no matter what category) for the fastest time in individual sections.

The in-between sections can be ridden at ease, or even walked.

In addition to Kona, the event is being supported by Skyline Cycles, Sombrio, Torq, Saris, Cycle-ops, Ritchey, The Dropoff Cafe and Mountain Biking UK, who will contribute to a large prize pot.

Categories

Enduro: Riders will take on the White's Level loop (excluding the black run) plus the July trail (total riding distance approx. 40km). They will be timed on a climb and several singletrack and downhill sections.

Technical: Competitors have to ride the White's Level loop (including the black run) but their times will only be taken on the singletrack and downhill sections.  The black run will have fibre optic 'live timing', with instant results available at the event village.

Event weekends

There's more to the Mash-Up than just racing. A range of companies will be at Glyncorrwg showing off their products and services, some of which will be available to test.

Once the riding comes to an end, there will be a finishing party at the Dropoff Cafe, and the prize presentation will continue until late into the night.
