Korean saddle and bag maker aiming for Brooks and Carradice

By Gary Boulanger, US editor | Wednesday, Sep 9, 2009 10.39pm

British saddle maker Brooks has owned the leather saddle category for decades, and now a Korean company called Zimbale is branching out into the lucrative US market via Hyde Park Cyclesports in Boise, Idaho.

"My own interest in Zimbale came about partly out of frustration with the unpredictable availability of similar products from existing suppliers and manufacturers," Hyde Park Cyclesports owner Jim Powers told BikeRadar. "I received an email from Zimbale and asked for some samples. I was impressed enough with the samples to begin a conversation about becoming the US distributor.

"We were able to come to an agreement, and now I'm working towards meeting their projections for sales in this country. Interbike is the first step."

According to Powers, the Zimbale brand was created by a small group of individuals with backgrounds in textiles, manufacturing and cycling who also saw the need for a more reliable source of fine leather saddles and leather and textile saddlebags. The group is in Korea, and the bags are made in Korea.

The US$159 Zimbale leather saddle is shaped like the Brooks Swallow model, made of Australian cowhide with saddlebag tabs. The US$79 Zimbale leather saddle bag comes in honey, brown or black Australian cowhide.

Powers is also distributing Zimbale's Carradice-inspired cotton saddlebags, starting at US$54 for the 2.3-litre seat pouch.

  • Far East manufacturer in ripping off old established company shocker

If I owned Brooks I would be consulting a solicitor

  • mmm... 'Carradice and Brooks' Inspired. Like an inspired fake Rolex watch!

    Please buy British originals!

  • I doubt the Italian owners of Brooks think that way, Stubs.

  • stubs, rupertm 1, nothing like a bit of casual racism eh fella's. no other bike / component manufacturer has ever borrowed ideas of another in history too. reminds me those thieving far eastern companies such as subaru, nissan, sony etc.

Fake Rolex watch? what planet you on?

  • It's pretty low when you have to start pointing the 'racism' stick about. Let's reserve the 'Racist' tag for people who actually deserve it please i.e. evil, sick folks who despise others just because of the colour of their skin. A desire for favouring your home countries traditional products over a foreign sourced knock-off doesn't even come close to racism. You'll be saying that wearing an England football shirt is racism next. God, it's reminiscent of the middle-ages. If you disagree with someone, say their a which and get them burned at the stake.

  • I'm all for Innovation, creativity and improvements in the manufacturing process that bring better products and Asian companies have been doing this for years and we have all benefited. Just would like to see some of those qualities put into these product rather than what looks like a fake. Racism no.. design snobbery maybe.. Ill climb down from my Swallow Ti!

  • It's very good looking saddle, but the price is not much different with Brooks.

  • Competition is a good thing. Products whose price far outstrips cost are always targets to be copied. See all those mega expensive women's purses as an example.

I don't see this as a company producing knockoffs, just another leather saddle supplier. Brooks may be the leader in this field, but they didn't invent the bicycle saddle, only improved upon the design. Now here is another company that is improving on Brooks' shortcomings (price, reliable distribution) and hoping to succeed. Good luck I say.

Its called capitalism, its why products and services improve over time. The consumer always wins with better products when they have a choice...

  • Many original products have prospered when "copy" products have come on the market. Just looks at the new VW Golf advert...."sounds like a Golf, looks like a Golf...handles like a Golf.."

IMO, a leather saddle like that will be called a Brooks saddle by most people, chances are even the sales talk will be "It looks like a Brooks, feels like Brooks, but is cheaper then a brooks."

  • I love it when people talk about capitalism like its a good thing!! Hahaha... oh my sides...

'Consumer choice', eh?? Come the day when you can only buy your bike parts from the selection in Tesco, that dogma might seem ironic. If that seems far fetched, try buying a loaf of bread, side of beef, newspaper, in my local town in a shop other than the big T. Cant be done.

  • obviously Dustine have never lived in other system- like comunism. Two brands of bicycles, two coices of cars and two choices of color TV. That was a lot of fun. Ha ha ha.

  • Recycled Biker, I write this whilst wearing my england shirt, put on especially for you. referring to Far Eastern companies who 'rip people off' is still, in my humble opinion, CASUAL racism. NO, im not a bigotted 'middle ages' witch burner. YES, I am an english man married to a japanese woman who is so tired off this lazy bigotry. and the little yellow jaoanese fellows were accused of all kinds of ripping off before their technical expertise annihilated all the opposition. Now they're recognised world leaders, with those 'rip off' companies such as Shimano. Now China and Korea are the new japan.

I KNOW those same comments would not have been made about an Italian or French company. And you do not, I repeat do not, have any right to call me Low until you yourself experience such cack handed, LOW minded comments as my kids do in ENGLAND.

  • VEF, you seem to imply that capitalism and communism are the only two options. They are not. Saying capitalism is not 'good' doesn't mean one is saying communism is good. Capitalism has produced many 'winners,' but also many 'losers.' Yes, we have greater products than before, quality of life is higher fmr many of us. But that's not the whole story is it? Since the industrial revolution began, we have systematically stepped up our abuse of natural resources and ecosystems, causing mass extinctions of species, and endangering countless others. At the same time, we have, and continue to jeopardize the potential for human existence on the planet with our carefree release of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. This all begs the question: does the consumer really win? Quite a legacy we have created for our children.

Bikes are awesome. But lets temper our enthusiasm with a bit of responsibility. If you live in the UK, but as much UK product as you can. That's not 'racist' behaviour, not nationalist. Its called buying local. Buying local means reducing the energy consumed along the line from manufacturer to your door. It also likely means your product will be manufactured under emissions or at least some sort of environmental protection regulations. It should not all be about who has the best product for the $. There is more at stake than that.

  • Never implied that buying UK product was racist in any shape or form. I stated that bigoted comments was racist. Massive difference there, no? Indeed I go out of my way to try and buy only UK and Japanese products of any natrue as much as I can. I want to support my own and my family's economy obviously. Also I'd hazard a guess that the new Japanese president elects commitment to reducing emissions goes above and beyond anything here in the UK. See here....

  • msurch, all the minuses of capitalism you mentioned were in USSR (socializm or comunism- call it as you like) as well only in more violent (against nature) expression . That system could Fu** up any ecosystem in world. And it consumed and destroyed naural resources no less than people in west. Only think that system coudn't do- make qality products (exept weapons and space ships). When some person from Soviet Union somehow managed visit some coutry to that side of iron curtain (Western Germany, Netherland, Sweden) he was amazed about how people care about enviroment and it's resources. Look at oil -wells in Norway and Russia- see the diference?

I think that attitude to envirement - it is more about education and persons own decisions. Capitalism is bad think- no questions about it, but can you show me better option?
