It seems that second place in last month's Giro d'Italia was not enough to secure Gilberto Simoni a new contract with the Lampre-Caffita team. According to a story in Thursday's edition of l'Equipe, the 34-year-old Italian is set to be released at the end of this season. Meanwhile, his co-leader at Lampre, Damiano Cunego, has been re-signed for the next three seasons.

Although Cunego and Simoni's very vocal differences appeared to have been patched up before and during the Giro, Simoni was critical about the lack of support he felt he received during the race, and most notably from Cunego. The 23 year old Cunego, was not pleased about Simoni's comments, and asked La Gazzetta dello Sport in a recent interview: "What more could we do? Push him?"

Cunego admitted once again that the pressure he felt during the Giro led to his stuttering and ultimately disappointing defence of that title. Whereas a couple of months ago, he had been talking up his prospects for the forthcoming Tour de France, the young Italian now says that he will be riding the race just for experience.
