Lance Armstrong has revealed that he and rock star girlfriend Sheryl Crow have broken up just two months before their wedding day. The pair released a statement on Friday announcing the news of the end of their relationship, which developed in October 2003 when they met in Las Vegas at a benefit organised by tennis star Andre Agassi.

The pair's statement read: "After much thought and consideration we have made a very tough decision to split up. We both have a deep love and respect for each other, and we ask that everyone respect our privacy during this very difficult time." Armstrong refused to make any further comment when contacted by the Austin American Statesman's Suzanne Halliburton, who did reveal that the couple had decided to break up earlier this week.

Crow, 43, spent considerable parts of the last two seasons with Armstrong in Europe as he first established a new record of six Tour de France wins in 2004 and then extended it to seven last year. There were rumours of a previous split between the pair last spring, but these were denied.

The strength of their relationship was confirmed when 34-year-old Armstrong proposed to Crow during a holiday in Idaho in August. Their wedding had been planned to take place in April.

Their last official public appearance together was in Austin on October 1, when Armstrong hosted a party to thank the city for its support during his cycling career, and Crow sang her greatest hits as part of the celebration.

Halliburton reports that there were rumours of a split between the pair last month, which Armstrong once again dened, saying: "No truth to it at all. Sorry to ruin the story."
