Lance Armstrong: "I'm racing the 2010 Tour"

Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong said on Tuesday he would definitely ride in next year's race, a reliable source told AFP.
The 37-year-old, presently second in this year's edition behind team-mate Alberto Contador, on Thursday is set to announce a new sponsor although he refused to say if it would replace his present team Astana.
However, his close friend and mentor Johan Bruyneel announced earlier on Tuesday that he is set to quit the Astana team as their team manager and rumours are rife that he is due to start up a new team with Armstrong the likely leader, possibly with the Livestrong Foundation, Nike and Trek.

Why not...its a logical step although it would be interesting to see if they can get Contador.....I guess that means Levi and Popo would be on the team too. Contador might be interested in leaving if for no other reason than an Astana with Vino might not get invited to the Tour next year.

G'day
Livestrong have clearly stated that as a non-profit entity they cannot sponsor a team, so why keep reporting they maybe? Don't you people do any basic research?

With Armstrong and Bryneel the usual close knit team and the friction between Armstrong and Contador during the tour, Contador may be poached by Caisse D'epargne. A spanish rider who wants to be the leader on a spanish team?

Just a question: will such a new team be automatically qualified for Pro Tour ???
Currently, Astana has "the ticket", and with incoming return of Vino and support of Kazakh sponsors, I thought that this Astana team will keep on in Pro Tour...

I should imagine a lot of the current Astana Team will be looking for a new team next year if Vino returns. I can't see many being willing to ride for him. Also, He'll be team leader because that will be what the sponsors want. It makes logical sense to look for an escape plan. I wouldn't be surprised if at least half the team try and follow Bryneel and Lance out of there.

Livestrong won't have to put any money in to have the team name. Other sponsors will be clamouring for the association and will happily finance it.

Since when Alonso is former F1 driver? As far as i know the double F1 champion is active F1 driver and has the reputation of best one among curent pilots.
And yes he likes cycling, and there were rumors that Alonso is forming Cycling team ( Renault and Santander were mentioned as sponsors, and Contador, Sestre? among team leaders).

@markkona
Not really, the resolve AC showed when he had no support from Astana and it was clear that LA had the control of the team faction; he was steel. LA only stood on the podium as his team sat on the peloton at every opportunity. AC on the other hand made all his own efforts to win, and did it largely by himself. Witness wiggins trying to get away and being sat on at Ventoux by an Astana rider, all the while LA sitting there doing sweet FA until wiggins could not counter-attack.

so LA has to revert to the usual plan.-sign up those who will work 4 him & only him.Looks like another boring strangled race 2010 as was all his wins.
Or perhaps AC can win it again despite a closed shop?. Hope so. What a talent.I'd like to know just what he needs to learn?
