- Defending Tour champion Lance Armstrong won't wear the yellow jersey in Saturday's stage one time trial between Fromentine and Noirmoutier. Just like at last year's prologue, the American will exercise his right to wear the colours of his Discovery Channel team when he sets off from the start house at 18:48CET.

- Following visits to the Tour de France in recent years from the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robin Williams and, of course, Sheryl Crow, arguably Hollywood's biggest star is rumoured to be putting in an appearance at Saturday's opening stage to Noirmoutier. Tom Hanks is currently in Paris for the shooting of the film version of The Da Vinci Code, and so it wouldn't take too much to travel the 400km west to pay his friend Lance Armstrong a visit.

- With the announcement of the winning city to host the 2012 Olympics to be made on Wednesday, Armstrong spoke to French TV channel France 2 of his displeasure at being dubbed "un-American" by the US press after recently backing Paris's rather than New York's bid. "I've been called a lot of things, but never 'un-American'. The New York Post, one of the biggest tabloids, called it 'the Tour de Weasel'," said Armstrong. "You can call me anything, but please don't call me 'un-American'."
