After spending a lot of time in a series of interviews earlier this week rubbishing the testosterone test that threatens to see him stripped of the Tour de France title, Floyd Landis changed tack on Tuesday evening and admitted he may have unwittingly taken something that led to his positive test for the hormone.

Interviewed by Jay Leno on 'The Tonight Show', Landis was given a severe grilling by the lantern-jawed talkshow host. Leno, who had clearly done his homework, asked Landis: ''I see you on these shows and I do want to believe you and evidence seems - I don't know if it's overwhelming - but it seems pretty conclusive, right?'' When Landis replied that, yes, if one goes by the tests the results are conclusive, Leno responded, "Why should we not go by the tests? Tell me why.''

Landis said there were several possibilities, including a first admission that he may well have taken something that led to his positive testosterone test. ''The tests and the people doing the tests would like you to believe that the only possibility is that I essentially took some drugs and that's why the test is that way. Now there's also the possibility, and it's an argument that has been used by other people. At this point, I don't know if it's somehow or some way I ingested something that caused the tests to be that way."

However, his focus, after previously discounting other suggestions made by his legal advisers, is clearly on discrediting those who did the test and on the viability of the test itself. "After I give them the sample, I don't know where it goes,'' he said of the test.
