The World Cup XC continued on Sunday 8th May 2005 with round 2 in Madrid, Spain. British rider Liam Killeen put in a great effort and finished 8th with Oli Beckinsale continuing his run of form, coming in 17th. The current Olympic champion, Julien Absalon took 1st place, beating the local favourite, Jose Hermida who finished 2nd.
Absalon is now beginning to appear unbeatable and looked much fresher after the race than most of his competitors. He stated that this was "too tactical for an Olympic course, it is too much like the road. It needs more hard climbs, longer climbs and more technical pieces. But, the amount of spectators was very impressive, we need to see more of that in the World Cup."
British rider, Nicole Cooke now looks to be taking her mountain biking seriously again by turning up to race in Madrid for her second successive World Cup. Cooke commented that she hopes to qualify for next year's Commonwealth Games in mountain biking as well as road.
