Shepherd is currently the charity's operations director. During his 12 years with the charity, three major Big Lottery Fund awards and projects such as Bike It and TravelSmart were responsible for getting thousands of people out of their cars to travel in ways that are better for their health and the environment.

As the twin imperatives of climate change and health continue to dominate the public agenda, Sustrans' work becomes more and more central to getting people traveling sustainably. Shepherd takes on the role at a crucial time in the charity's 30 year history.

"I'm passionate about the work that Sustrans does, and my position is unique as I have been fortunate enough to work with the charity during some of its most exciting times," Shepherd said. "I'll be using the next two months to establish my priorities for the coming years to continue to build on the success of this amazing organisation."

Shepherd will take over as CEO on 14 June 2008.
