Matt Simmons wins first round of Caersws Cup downhill

Blizzard-like conditions in Wales

The first round of Wales’s Caersws Cup downhill series took place at the weekend on a muddy course in blizzard-like conditions.

Matt Simmons (CRC/Intense) won the elite race ahead of Rob Smith and Ralph Jones (Dirt), who finished second and third respectively.

Race organiser Chris Roberts said: “The elite race was full of upset and [the conditions] caught a couple of riders out. During his first run, Scott Beaumont fell on entry to the muddy field and managed to slide down the entire length of the hill.”

Simmons also took home the £100 bonus from P Yates Cycles for the fastest time of the day.

The four-event series continues with round two on 9/10 May, while rounds three and four are on 11/12 July and 22/23 August. For more information, go to caerswscup.co.uk.
