Might have beens

Dan Atherton has had a heavy year, now the World No 8 is drawing lessons from a season of might have beens.
Dan Atherton is currently rated 8th in the World at Downhill by the UCI, second only to Steve Peat. He ranks 2nd in the UK. But he isn't going to the big bike show in Vegas this year. His brother Gee is going alone. For Dan admits he is tired and, after a hectic year, wants to take stock, sort out his training and decide what to do next season.

"We moved house at the beginning of the season. Then Gee, Helen Gaskell and I went off training in France Since then I've done 4X and Downhill at the Worlds, including one in America, we've done loads of Maxxis cups, plus the domestic racing... it's been a weird year."

You sound a bit shell shocked.

"I suppose you could say I'm contemplating the might have beens. I put a lot into 4X because that is supposed to be the spectator sport, and I did well, but did it help my downhill?

Anyway, when I saw the Eurosport Season Round Up it was all downhill and XC. So I am wondering if I got my priorities right."

You think you might concentrate on downhill next season?

"As I say, I'm contemplating the season and the might have beens, but I could go that way, yes."
