Millar's doping crisis worsens

According to reports in this morning's L'Equipe newspaper in France - and on several leading news agencies - Britain's David Millar, leader of the Cofidis team, allegedly admitted to blood doping while under police questioning in Biarritz, when taken into custody over the past 72 hours. These unconfirmed reports concerning Millar's interview are said to emanate from an official close to the investigation in Paris. Other sources have also told procycling that Millar is apparently today in discussions with his own lawyers as to the way ahead. According to L'Equipe's report, Millar allegedly told police he has taken the banned performance enhancer EPO, during his career. A police official who spoke to news agencies on condition of anonymity, said that police found two used syringes in a search of Millar's home in Biarritz. Under their own interpretation of UCI regulations, claims L'Equipe, any admission by Millar of doping will be deemed equivalent to a positive test; this appears likely to endanger his own participation in both the Tour de France and the Athens Olympics, not to mention the Cofidis team's participation in the 2004 Tour. A spokesman for the British Olympic Association (BOA) in London said that the body were closely monitoring the situation and that Millar remained a selected athlete. "That remains contingent on his continued nomination from the governing body, British Cycling," he said. "We can't pre-judge the situation. Nothing formal has been sent to the BOA by British Cycling."
