Missouri 3: Vande Velde wins time trial, takes lead

American dethrones Cavendish with stunning win against the clock

Garmin-Chipotle's Christian Vande Velde won the Stage 3 18-mile individual time trial at the 2008 Tour of Missouri in 39:51, breaking Team Columbia sprinter Mark Cavendish's grip on the leader's jersey and consecutive sprint victories.

Vande Velde beat Cavendish's teammate and triple time trial world champion Michael Rogers by 20 seconds. Sven Tuft (Symmetrics Cycling Team) came in third, 33 seconds back.

Cavendish finished the race in 44 minutes.
