Montane Kielder 100: new marathon race in UK
The Montane Kielder 100, a 100 mile mountain bike marathon in the Kielder Water and Forest Park, Northumberland, will take place on Saturday, 5 September 2009.
The race will raise the bar for UK marathon racing on the miles of technical singletrack in the area with a smattering of fire roads, grass tracks and just one road crossing.
Riders will hit the trails at 6.30am, and will have to reach each of the three feed stations by an allotted time. There are only two race categories – Open and Vets, and entry costs £50.
Event organiser Sara Randle (SIP Events) said: "100 mile ultra endurance racing is really popular in other parts of the world but we only ever do 65 miles in this country. I wanted to do something different, I just needed to find somewhere big enough and Kielder had always been on my short list. It's going to be a very hard race, but hopefully it will be top of their list to train for and come back and have another go at next year."

Hmm... 50pounds to enter? Is this what you guys normally pay for a big one day race in the UK? Sounds a bit steep. Im only asking becuase I might be moving to the UK soon and plan to continue cycling.

£50 sounds like a huge bargain compared to trithlon at the moment. £65 is the going rate for an event that last 2.5 hours. An ironman starts at £250, nice

It's a rip-off, and there's is no way the costs can be justified to run an event, no matter the size. I'm sick of these organisations taking advantage of good hearted sports.

Yeah that's right complete rip off, that's why there are so many race organisers out there it's such a rich sport...Not!!!
Of course they wouldn't have spent months planning the event travelling at their own cost to suss out the area, have loads of meetings with the powers that be to try and set up this innovative event. Oh and they would have just got a map and drawn a crude line roughly where they want the course to run, after all finding a hundred mile loop is easy in this country that is totally off road, why would they take the time and the effort to ride it themselves? They more than likely wont be shelling out for insurance or public liabilty either, nor will they be paying for First Aid cover, oh and I'm sure they'll just use stop watches for timing, after all it's just the first across the line that counts. There is no way they would be dedicated riders who want to expand the area of endurance racing, inspired by such events that are run in the States ( which by the way would cost you $250 to enter... )
Plus of course thousands will be entering, so think of the cash they'll be racking in for no effort....
God if only it was this easy, don't you think there would be loads of events up and down the country and they'd all be driving round in posh land rovers... LOL...
Wake up and smell the coffee. It costs time, effort and believe it or not cash to put events on. They don't happen over night and the land owners don't let you use the land for free. Why shouldn't the guys make some money out of putting on quality events? It is after all a 'job' .I don't think it'll ever be enough to retire on! Or do you think they should just do it for the 'love' and get guys like you slagging 'em off cos they actually got off their behinds and made an effort!
If you think £50 is too much, then hey, don't enter, there are loads of 1 lap 100 hundred mile races you can enter in this country right? And they're all bound to be cheaper....
Why not organise one yourself and make a killing in it while you're at it? Obviously it's real easy.
Guess you won't be entering then? never mind eh.... Sure the guys and girls that do ride it will enjoy it and appreciate the effort that has gone into trying to raise the enduro racing bar.
