NAHBS 2013 Award Winner: Avery County Cycles

Denver builder's "city 'cross bike" meant for real riding

The North American Handmade Bicycle Show is many things, an art show not the least among them. Many of the fanciful creations on display are the epitome of show bikes — meant for impressive showing, not necessarily everyday riding. The bike that new exhibitor Avery County Cycles showed, however, was a distinct departure from that model. Although replete with lovely details in the sculpted lugs, painted details and copper bolts, Avery's city ’cross bike is a utilitarian machine ready to hit the gritty streets.

Avery County Cycles won "best new builder" for blending form with function

For his vision and execution, builder Josh Culbertson was awarded "best new builder" at NAHBS. It was a nice home win for the Denver-based builder.

At the show, Culbertson was humble about the bike, saying he didn't even have a name for it, but wanted to build a cyclocross bike with a shorter wheelbase for fast on- and off-road riding.
