New challenge for round-the-world record holder James Bowthorpe

Round-the-world record holder James Bowthorpe is preparing for a new challenge – leading a team of 25 amateur cyclists from one end of Britain to the other in just eight days.

Bowthorpe, who circumnavigated the globe in just 174 days and five hours last year, smashing the previous record set by Mark Beaumont by 20 days, is continuing his efforts to raise funds for What's Driving Parkinson's.

He and his team will set off from John O'Groats at the tip of Scotland on Sunday and will need to cover 120 miles a day to make it to Land's End, Cornwall on target.

But the focus is not just on the cycling – instead of snacking at burger vans and the like along the way, they'll instead be linking up with local food producers. Here's the itinerary:

  • Day 1: John O’Groats to Inverness
  • Day 2: Inverness to Perth
  • Day 3: Perth to Otterburn
  • Day 4: Otterburn to Keighly
  • Day 5: Keighly to Coleshill
  • Day 6: Coleshill to Radstock
  • Day 7: Radstock to Liskeard
  • Day 8: Liskeard to Lands End

Bowthorpe's JOGLE 2010 challenge, which is also being called Slow Food, Fast Ride, coincides with the impending publication of the new Guinness Book of World Records, which includes his round-the-world title.

He is hoping to raise £1.8 million for What's Driving Parkinson's?, which funds research into Parkinson's disease at The Maudsley Hospital in south London. Bowthorpe, whose grandfather had Parkinson's, has volunteered at the research clinic for the past three years.

To donate, visit James's JustGiving page or sponsor one of his fellow riders via the Jogle 2010 website.
