New Fast Fender mudguard from Crud Catcher
A new front mudguard called the Fast Fender from legendary mudguard makers Crud Catcher will be released at BikeRadar Live.
The slimline motocross-inspired fender has been designed to catch that annoying spray that creeps out under your fork crown at speed.

Unlike other designs that have used steerer tube fittings and had various compatibility issues, the Fast Fender is handlebar-mounted and also allows direct fitting of a race number plate.
Crud Catchers have become the off-road mudguard of choice after Pete Tomkins designed the original one in 1991. Steve Peat has been using one for 15 years and had a hand in designing the new Fast Fender along with 'Son of Crud’ Jamie Tomkins.
Up until last weekend production was six weeks away, but Jamie and Pete couldn't miss the opportunity to release it at BikeRadar Live - so their tool makers are flat out getting them made.

This review is ridiculous, the innovation is on the handlebar mount, but that is what is NOT shown on the pictures, DAAAHH!

I bet it flaps around on descents.
'innovative handlebar mount'. if it was that good there wouldnt be a conviniently placed number plate in pic!
Looks cruddy too.

First off, need better pictures and to try one obviously but...
To be honest i used to like the old arch mounted crud catchers, they flapped around a bit but once set up with a bit of extra effort worked really well (i used to find MOST of the spray was stopped, i may be wrong...), and as they were nearer the wheel they were out of the way and looked pretty cool. It's a shame they didn't become more popular, all they needed was a better arch mount design.
Anyone remember those?

Reinventing the, er, mudguard. What they're showing here is a Shockboard with a stupid mounting and no protection behind the forks. Why even bother? Crud could make a great moto-style guard, no doubt, so why this weird thing?

my guess is that in a couple of months you'll have bought one. Now I don't get the Neo Guard, but hey we are all different.

Mr.Crud here
Since the late nineties, I have been toying with the idea of a proper motocross-style mudguard. With all the different fork styles out there, I have never really seriously thought it possible to make a truly universal, easy-to-fit, RELIABLE product that you could trust, so I didn't bother to make one.
This idea came to me only 3 months ago. I suddenly realised that all mountainbikes have nearly the same distance between handlebars and fork crown. I remember from the seventies that some motocross fenders were supported by a similar attatchment from the handlebars. and the idea was born.
I gave son Jamie the brief...hangs off the handlebars, looks good, works in conjunction with a crudcatcher, and 3 days later he came back with the basic design.
We went and showed the first prototype to Steve, who suggested some improvements, and within a few weeks we had finalised the design. We ordered the tool a month ago, and it was finished in time for Bikeradar.
We had pre-sold 2,500 just on the strength of Steve's involvment and various website releases before the tooling was even finished! and are in full production as I write this (3.6.09).
That is from concept to successful sales in 3 months. All British-made of course. We send the first batches to our German and US distributors later in the month.
It's Fort William next weekend. Am I the only person in the country praying for rain?

how do you get round the fact that when steering left or right the bike mud will flick up towards the upper body of the rider becuase the down tube is not blocking the mud?
I think this is only effective with a crud catcher as well. Cant you make one with an extended piece going vertically down then bending under the crown and over the other side of the wheel?
