New UK cycling maps and guides released

UK cycling charity Sustrans is springing into the cycling season with new maps and a guidebook.

Sustrans has introduced two new additions to its Discover map series, the Three Rivers Cycle Route Map and the Yorkshire Wolds, York and Hull Cycle Route Map and, following the success of the Lochs and Glens guide, a new compact guidebook to the cross-border Coast and Castles route.

Coast and Castles Guide

Coast and Castles is the second in a series of user-friendly guides, developed by Sustrans and Scottish outdoors publisher Pocket Mountains. It covers the cross-border route (National Cycle Network Route 1) stretching from the bustling city of Newcastle to the sparkling granite streets of Aberdeen.  

The epic 368-mile route has been split into two sections. Coast and Castles South covers the route from Newcastle to Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh. Coast and Castles North (previously mapped as Edinburgh to Aberdeen) beckons cyclists north from Edinburgh, through the Kingdom of Fife, along the Angus coastline to the stunning skyline of Aberdeen.

The 96-page compact guide is laid out in manageable day-long sections with detailed descriptions of the route, terrain, distance, and approximate riding time.  Each section has advice on what to see, where to stay and where you can stop-off for any spares and repairs.

New Discover maps covering the northern and southern sections of the Coast and Castles route will be available later in the year.

Yorkshire Wolds, York and Hull Cycle Route Map

This new map covers previously unmapped trails, including part of the North Sea Cycle Route (National Cycle Network Route 1) from Hull to Hunmanby, as well as familiar routes, like sections of the White Rose Cycle Route and Trans Pennine Trail.  The map gives two-wheeled travellers the choice of national, regional and local routes which criss-cross the chalk hills and guide you out to the North Sea coast.  Users can take in the cycle-friendly cities of York and Hull or head for the traditional seaside resorts of Hornsea and Bridlington.

Three Rivers Cycle Route Map

The newest addition to Sustrans' Discover series is the updated Three Rivers Cycle Route Map.  Mapped as National Cycle Network Route 14, the Three Rivers route guides cyclists through the contrasting landscapes and scenery surrounding the River Tyne, Tees and Wear.  

Options covered include a ride along the North Sea coast from South Shields, cycling along the cliffs of Marsden Bay to the mouth of the River Wear at Sunderland, or heading inland to the North Pennines on Regional Route 20 (Walney to Wear Cycle Route).  The new map also plots a wealth of interlinking cycle routes, including the well-known Sea-to-Sea Route (National Cycle Network Route 7) and Hadrian's Cycleway (National Cycle Network Route 72) to help you make the best of the area by bike.  

All the guide and maps are available from Sustrans' online shop, along with a series of maps and guides covering other parts of the British Isles.
