PICTURE BY TIM DE WAELE Vuelta revelation Santiago Perez has withdrawn from Sunday's world championship road race after being taken ill last Sunday evening while celebrating his second place finish in his home tour. Spanish selector Paco Antequera announced that almost as soon as he had arrived in Italy he had received a call from Perez in which the Phonak rider said he was suffering with stomach problems and had taken to hospital for treatment. "I told him not to worry. His withdrawal gave me the chance to call up Tino Zaballa, and I'm very pleased to have him in the team, because he took a great stage win at the Vuelta and deserves a place at the Worlds," Antequera told AS.
