Alessandro Petacchi won Thursday's third stage of the Tour of Valencia, getting the better of emerging Italian rival Danilo Napolitano, with Allan Davis third. The lead stayed with Rabobank's Alexandr Kolobnev, going into today's key mountain stage with a summit finish at the Alto del Campello.

Kolobnev's chances of holding on to his lead on Friday could well rest with the weather, with freezing conditions and heavy snow threatening the close of the Campello climb and forcing a route change. Last year, in almost the same circumstances, the climb was closed due to snow and Juan Antonio Flecha won a stage that ended in Vallada at the foot of the mountain.

A snowstorm on Thursday night was expected to cover all roads above 400 metres in the region, well below the Campello's summit at 650. If the stage is shortened, this should play into Kolobnev's hands, as the locally based and very in-form Comunitat Valenciana team are planning a major offensive.
