Alessandro Petacchi (Milram) won today's second stage of the Tour of Valencia in Villarreal, finishing ahead of Danilo Napolitano (Lampre) and Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval). Stage one winner Alexandr Kolobnev (Rabobank) retained the overall lead.

Tight control was maintained by the bunch over a group of four Spanish riders, who never got much more than a couple of minutes clear. They were reeled in almost 30km from the finish as the sprinters' teams, and especially Milram, asserted their control.

Petacchi, who won the overall title in Valencia last year, admitted his win had been complicated by the strength of the wind. "There was a strong headwind in the finishing straight, which made it a difficult sprint, and so I got on Danilo Napolitano's wheel in the run to the line," said the Italian sprinter.
