Pinarello named as Team Sky bike sponsor
Team Sky have announced Pinarello as their bicycle sponsor. The Italian manufacturer signed on to act as the official frame and fork supplier to the new British squad until 2013.
Fausto Pinarello, president of Cicli Pinarello, said: "We are very happy with this new partnership. Team Sky’s goal of becoming one of the world’s leading cycling teams fits with our objective of continuing and growing our presence as one of the world’s leading bicycle manufacturers. We have signed a three-year agreement and we look forward to a long, prosperous and successful collaboration."
Pinarello are one of the world's most recognisable marques. The family company's patriarch, Giovanni Pinarello, found the firm in 1952 and began sponsorship of professional teams in 1960. Since then the company has enjoyed exposure with teams including Team Telekom, Banesto, Fassa Bortolo and Caisse d'Epargne.
Team Sky are not the first British team to be sponsored by the Italian company. Pinarello have supported the CandiTV-Marshalls Pasta squad since 2007 and had previously supplied bikes to Rapha-Condor predecessor Recycling.co.uk Pro Cycling Team.
The announcement of the Team Sky deal is not expected to affect Pinarello's sponsorship of ProTour team Caisse d'Epargne. Team Sky's ProTour status will see the company represented by both squads at the top level of professional cycling.
While Pinarello have been confirmed as frame and fork sponsor, Team Sky are yet to announce which companies will provide groupsets, wheels and components.

Pity, would have been nice for a British team to ride UK designed bikes. Pinarello are not particularly nice looking, they always look cack-handed with unnecessary swoopy bits that seem to be there just for the sake of it.
It would have been great if they started to manufacture and sell road going versions of the GB track machines and maybe use the proceedings to help fund the team and showcase the technology (obviously watered-down for the man in the street). It would allow folk to buy-in to the whole GB team experience.

I knew they would be either on Treks or Pinarellos!
Good to see, Pinarello invest time into their bikes and they look super sick (just a tad cooler than Raleigh) and they are dead light and stiff.

of course they (err we) do. wouldnt be a british web site if it didnt have a full complement of moaning and bitterness. Perhaps you arent aware that its much better to moan (or at least plan to moan) than actually go and design and make a bike as good as a pinerello?

Saying a "Pinerello is not particularly nice looking" is as wrong as saying "Keeley is not particularly buxom." That's just crazy talk.

i must admit - i was kinda hoping for a british bike manufacturer - but hey its not as though they have gone for a substandard brand to do the job. It would be awesome to see british riders on british bikes on a british team.
Im now just waiting for their jerseys to come out - i think they have one guranteed customer anyway :)

What do people think on the gruppo an wheels front?
My preferance would be for campy and mayb zipp wheels. But i think it is much mire likely to be Shimano (use of the electronic group on the TT bikes) and possibly even Sram as they continue to invade the peloton.
Im guessing Brtish cycling already have good links with Mavic for a wheel provider due to their use of track wheels - that could be developed into a road partenership that works best for everyone. Plus its a european provider - slightly closer to home.
Peoples musings on the matter?

I love the way someone who calls himself whydoesitalwaysrainonme complains about people moaning.

I knew it!
Much rather have had a more subtle bike but there is no doubting that they are good.
They will be Shimano Di2 equiped with an SRM crank of some type. Feel free to bet against me :)

Yeah, and I'm watching the X Factor thinking "what a hound" every time Cheryl Cole comes into frame. Especially those unnecessarily swoopy bits under that see-through dress, which are just there for the sake of it.

Who/what are Keeley, X Factor & Cheryl Cole?
Not much point to a lot of the cosmetic stuff they put on bikes and the big "P" is one of the worst offenders. The GB track bikes just look superbly designed & built nothing unnecessary, nothing to tart them up just seriously well built, practical and fast bikes.
As the old saying goes "if it does the job well the tool is beautiful" Pinarello and many other manufacturers just pander to the ignorance of fashion-victims because adding stuff has no major performance penalty for carbon-fiber frames.
The really difficult thing is to keep things simple and efficient because everyone would end up with the same designs (they certainly wouldn't look like a Pinarello) and sales would be based on merit not eye-candy.
I guess this deal was a tender, not based on the quality of the equipment but cost overhead and the cheapest equipment, balanced against reliability.

I like it. Very Cool. British bikes, mmm not so sure, couldn't see them on a Boardman, could you really.

Isn't there a strong association with Campagnolo and Pinarello? Don't really there is any British bike that compares to an Italian made, is there? Can opened, worms everywhere???
