Discovery Channel's Yaroslav Popovych produced a devastating late burst of power and speed to clinch Wednesday's second stage of the Tour de Georgia in Rome. The Ukrainian blasted clear in the final 200 metres of a tough finish, and came home six seconds clear of a group led in by Toyota's Juan Jos Haedo, with Freddy Rodriguez third.

"I felt I could do what I did," he said of his surge at the finish. "And I talked to my team-mates, and I said I was going to go. They told me to go for it," Popovych said.

Popovych was urged on by former team leader Lance Armstrong, who joined Discovery Channel team manager Johan Bruyneel in the team car. The stage, run off in heavy rain and thunderstorms, was initially dominated by Argentine rider Alejandro Acton, who spent 150 kilometres away on his own before being caught 20km from home.

Popovych's victory puts him in prime position for Thursday's 40km time trial into Chattanooga.
