President’s Council recognize Trips for Kids

Founder presented Community Leadership award

The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) awarded Marilyn Price its annual Community Leadership Awards for her work in developing Trips for Kids, a non-profit organization that introduces cycling to at-risk children.

“We love receiving awards as they help promote and lend credibility to what we do,” Price said. “Receiving a national award such as the PCFSN is quite an honor and will definitely help to expand our program.”

Trips for Kids organize bike rides for children between the ages of 10-17 that would not otherwise have the access to bicycles. Price created the organization 22 years ago in San Francisco and has expanded to more than 70 chapters across the US, Canada and Israel. The organization has served over 75,000 children.

Trip for Kids chapters offer an opportunity for children to build confidence and environmental awareness. In addition, the organization offers Earn-a-Bike Workshop program for children to learn about bicycle mechanics and safety. In return for their participation they earn credits toward owning their own bike.

Other workshops include the Green Cyclers Program that teaches kids environmental awareness and the Re-Cyclery Program that revamps second-hand bicycles.

This year, Trips for Kids hired a full-time staffer to run the national program and fundraise, so that more staff can be hired in the future. Contributions raised will also go toward supporting existing chapters and developing new partners.

The PCFSN works to promote healthy lifestyles through fitness, sports and nutrition initiatives and programs across the nation. The 25-person volunteer committee is appointed by the President and selects no more than 50 recipients annually to receive the Community Leadership Award. This year there were 26 recipients.

"It is our pleasure to present this award to Marilyn Price," says Shellie Pfohl, Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. "Physical activity and good nutrition are important components of living a healthy lifestyle, and we are pleased to recognize individuals like Marilyn Price who are committed to making a difference and positively influencing the health of their communities."
