Prized crit series on Down Under

Bay Classic starts Jan. 2 in Victoria

A swag of the best Australian riders and elite internationals spearhead a class field for the upcoming Jayco Bay Cycling Classic, to be held from January 2-6 in Victoria, Australia.

Men's defending champion Mark Renshaw, Stuart O'Grady, Graeme Brown, Simon Gerrans, Allan Davis, Brett Lancaster, Aaron Kemps, Henk Vogels, Kate Bates, Oenone Wood and Sara Carrigan form part of the star-studded line-up, and will be joined by riders from Japan, New Zealand, England, Scotland, Netherlands and Canada.

The five-race series for both men and women begins in Williamstown on Wednesday, followed by stages in Portarlington and Geelong. Contested on a points basis rather than time, the top ten riders in each race accumulate points with the persons scoring the most points crowned overall winner of the series.

Locals Baden Cooke and Matt Wilson will ride their last races together on the same team before the former begins a new season with Barloworld and Wilson off to America with a new US Continental squad, Team Type 1.

"We are going out with a bang," said Cooke to AAP. "We've both had some good wins. Hopefully we can ride together again in the future but it's been good to go out on a high note."
