Despite the best efforts of Team CSC's Fabian Cancellara, who attacked the peloton going under the kilometre kite, Tom Boonen won his third consecutive stage at the Tour of Qatar this afternoon. The world champion once again beat Erik Zabel into second place, with Cancellara's CSC team-mate Matti Breschel third.

Victory pushed Boonen's overall lead thanks to bonus seconds out to 12 seconds. But the Belgian admitted it had been a close run thing. "The last four kilometres were very hard with the wind coming right at us. Then Fabian Cancellara attacked at the kilometre kite," he explained.

"Over a kilometre he is faster than me, but the work my team-mates, Guido Trenti and Steven de Jongh, put in proved to be very efficient.
