Britain's newest 4X starTo become one of the top 4X riders in the country is a dream for most riders. Richard Batey's making it a reality...
While most people haven't heard of Richard Batey, he's all set to be a big-name rider in the near future. In under a year, the Doncaster lad has rocketed from being a guy mucking around on the trails to a full-on BSX pro. In fact, Richard is one of the most talented riders in the UK. He's only been riding for three years and racing regularly for one season, but he's already taken second place overall in the Elite category of the 03 NPS 4X Series; an astonishing accomplishment highlighted by the fact he was only one point behind series winner Scott Beaumont.
Richard is also the current BMX National Series winner in the ultra-competitive 17+ class and, to top off his phenomenal rookie year, he's been selected to try out for a place on the British BMX squad that will compete for the first time at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Despite his obvious skill at BMX, Richard is different to the majority of 4X/BMX racers in that he prefers riding his mountain bike. "I only race BMX because the races are far better organised," says Batey. "If mountain bike racing was as well organised and had the same number of competitors as BMX races, I'd only race mountain bikes."
