PICTURE BY TDWSPORT.COM Russia's former track prodigy Dmitri Neliubin has died after being stabbed during a fight that took place in St Petersburg during the new year celebrations. Neliubin, who won an Olympic gold medal in the team pursuit at Seoul in 1988, and two of his friends were attacked by unknown assailants outside the home of another of their friends. Neliubin and his two friends were taken to hospital but doctors were unable to save the life of the 32-year-old. No arrests have yet been made in the case. Neliubin was just 17 when he teamed up with Viatcheslav Ekimov, Arturas Kasputis and Olympic individual pursuit champion Guintautas Umaras to win that team pursuit gold medal. Neliubin was nurtured by celebrated Russian track coach Alexandre Kuznetsov, who also brought Ekimov through. Both a world individual and team pursuit champion, Neliubin turned pro with the Belgian Novmail team in 1993, where he joined up again with Ekimov. Third place in that year's Japan Cup suggested that Neliubin had the makings of a good road pro, but he never built on that promise. He followed Ekimov to WordPerfect/Novell in 1994/5, then rode for RDM in 1996 and Roslotto in 1997, after which he failed to get another contract.
