Scott USA have taken over as title sponsor of the Swisspower mountain bike team, who won over 50 medals at international championships between 2002 and 2008, and helped develop the Scale hardtail and Spark full-suspension bikes.
The multi-year deal allows the management, led by recently retired pro Thomas Frischknecht, to continue its direction under what's now called the Scott-Swisspower MTB Racing Team
“The example Thomas Frischknecht has set in regards to sportsmanship and ethics in sport is like none other," Scott spokesman Adrian Montgomery told BikeRadar. "The members of this team are among the best in the world. We felt stepping up to title sponsor would provide the team with more tools to compete internationally, and would send the message that we are serious about cross-country competition.”
According to Montgomery, while the name is new, the concept remains the same; the best Swiss mountain bike talents riding for an experienced, professional team under the guidance of Frischknecht and director Andi Seeli. The team also welcome two new names, Marcel Wildhaber, a cyclo-cross specialist in the elite category and Roger Walder, a talented junior rider.
“With regards to Frischi, he is also evolving as a mountain biker," Montgomery added. "He just retired from the World Cup, but he will always be a mountain biker. He’s agreed to compete at the 2009 Downieville Classic in the all-mountain category.”
Nino Schurter, Florian Vogel and other members of Scott-Swisspower MTB Racing got a jump on the season during a three-week training camp in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Their efforts were well rewarded this past weekend when the 2009 mountain bike season kicked off at the Maremma Cup in Massa Marittima, Tuscany. Florian capitalized on his early season form by taking out the win, and Nino followed him onto the podium making it a Scott-Swisspower MTB Racing one two.
