In spite of the uproar that followed Italy's failure to capture the world road title or even a medal in Madrid last month, the azzurri's national coach, Franco Ballerini has been confirmed in the post by the Italian federation. The only change to the national coaching set-up sees former pro Silvio Martinello appointed a technical director with responsibility for overseeing Italy's track riders at a specially created facility near Brescia.

- England has announced a strong 25-rider team for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March. Included are Olympic gold medallists Bradley Wiggins and Jason Queally, as well as the team pursuit quartet who won the world title in Los Angeles earlier this year - Steve Cummings, Rob Hayles, Paul Manning and Chris Newton. Sprint star Victoria Pendleton is among those selected for the women's events.

- Speculation is growing that Australian sprinter and Classics star Stuart O'Grady will be joining the Unibet.com team after their failure to secure to signature of Gilberto Simoni. Unibet have already agreed deals with Spaniards Carlos Garcia Quesada and Luis Pasamontes, and Italian Marco Serpellini.
