Italian drugs investigators today underlined the seriousness with which they are viewing Lance Armstrong's dispute with Filippo Simeoni at the Tour de France by inviting the Italian for questioning in Florence. Simeoni will be asked to supply his version of heated conversations with Armstrong and other Italian riders on stage 18 of the Tour in particular. The Florentine investigators are eager to ascertain whether there may be grounds for legal proceedings, and specifically charges of "intimidating a witness." Armstrong may also be summoned in the coming weeks and months, depending on what Simeoni tells police today. The 32-year-old Domina Vacanze rider alleged during last Friday's stage from Annemasse to Lons le Saunier that compatriots Giuseppe Guerini, Filippo Pozzato and Daniele Nardello had all vented to their hostility towards him after his mid-race spat with Armstrong. Viatcheslav Ekimov and, according to reports in Italy, Matthew Wilson, made gestures betraying similar sentiments when Simeoni attacked three times, again in vain, on Sunday. Simeoni famously testified in the trial of Armstrong's performance consultant, Michele Ferrari, two years ago. More news on this story later.
