Sneak peek: New Splashback tyre from Charge

By BikeRadar | Thursday, Jun 10, 2010 9.00am

We've managed to get spy shots of a new tyre from Charge, the Splashback, which looks set to blend old-school looks with bang-up-to-date cross-country performance.

With its skinwall-effect sidewalls and a centre tread that looks vaguely like a semi-slick version of an old Onza Porcupine, at first glance the prototype Splashback looks like it could be a matter of retro style over substance.

But look closer and you'll note the dual compound rubber, keyhole-shaped side knobs and 120 TPI (threads per inch) casing, which should give a good blend of straight-line speed, cornering traction and comfort.

The Splashback will be available in 1.8in and 2.1in widths, with a choice of amber or black sidewalls. There's no word yet on whether a 29er version will be available. Production tyres are expected to hit shops in the autumn. Look out for a review in What Mountain Bike.

  • ...new school octopus...

  • If I was the designer of this tire I would let those little bumps from in the center of the tire come all the way between the side knobs because now its super smoot between the side knobs

  • Onza porc's rocked!

Shame they never lasted more than acouple of rides though...

These look good, I'll try them with the folding wall; should be a fast rolling lightweight summer tyre. Bring on the dust!

  • Any idea where I can get a set??
