PIC © TIM DE WAELE Gert Steegmans (Quick.Step) has won the third stage of the Three Days of De Panne in a mass sprint. The powerful Belgian was able to hold off Daniele Bennati (Lampre) and Gabriele Balducci (Acqua e Sapone) on the cobbled finishing straight in De Panne. Race leader Luca Paolini (Liquigas) managed to finish in the top 10, giving himself the best possible chance at the overall win after this afternoon's closing time trial. "This ððððððððððððððððððððwill do a lot of good," Steegmans told Belgian TV after the stage. "Because I'm someone who quickly starts to doubt himself. At the start of the season, I still had the legs to beat Petacchi, but after that it wasn't as good. On Wednesday I raced easy. I thought that I was bad and didn't sprint, but afterwards I was sorry I didn't. On Thursday I told myself that I would definitely sprint, no matter how good the rest were. It's great that it worked. "The better Steegmans is coming: Sunday I'm a domestique, in Gent-Wevelgem I can go for my own chance." From start to finish The final stage was a 119km loop starting and finishing in De Panne. Once again it was sunny but chilly, as the riders started shortly after 9am local time. Tom Boonen, Alberto Ongarato, Leon van Bon and Filippo Pozzato were all non-starters, preferring to save their legs for Sunday's Tour of Flanders. The opening kilometres of the stage were fast, with the first real attacks starting after 25km. But it took until km 38 before a break was established, as Elio Aggiano (Tinkoff), Ralf Grabsch (Milram), Christophe Mengin (Franaise des Jeux), Sven Nevens (Jartazi), Wim De Vocht (Predictor-Lotto), Christian Murro (Tenax) and the battered Niko Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques) escaped. The break was a good one, and built a lead of over a minute as the seven men covered 48.2km in the first hour. The break was able to make more time over the stage's three climbs, increasing its advantage to 1'44. Elio Aggiano took the points on the Monteberg (km 52) and Vidaigneberg (km 60) while Murro was first on the Rodeberg (km 58). The climbers jersey had already been secured by Jan Kuyckx (Landbouwkrediet) in the preceding stages, however. Wim de Vocht was the best placed on general classification, sitting 2'42 behind leader Paolini. But the break wasn't even allowed that much room as Lampre, T-Mobile, Unibet and Quick.Step led the chase on the run back to De Panne. At 31km to go, the gap was back under a minute, prompting Eeckhout to attack in front. Still suffering from his broken rib, Eeckhout was unable to get clear and the break made it to the final 20 km with half a minute. Eeckhout tried again at 16km to, but with the might of the peloton chasing it was nothing doing. All of the seven breakaways were caught with 11km to go, prompting a new move by James Vanlandschoot (Landbouwkrediet) and Glenn D'Hollander (Chocolade Jacques). That came to nothing as the race reached the 9km finishing lap in De Panne. Luca Paolini showed he was on thye ball by winning the 3 second bonus sprint across the line ahead of Ballan and Lagutin. With 7km left, Koen de Kort (Astana) attacked, and was chased down by Nico Mattan (DFL-Cyclingnews-Litespeed), Andy Cappelle (Landbouwkrediet) and Matteo Priamo (Panaria). The three caught and dropped the Dutchman, and made a brave bid to stay out of reach of the sprinters teams. 10 seconds wasn't enough, and with 1km to go the bunch swept them up. Paolini looked to be well placed in the sprint, but it was Gert Steegmans who surged to the front in the final 150m to win the stage ahead of a strong Bennati and Balducci. This afternoon's 11km time trial between De Panne and Koksijde will conclude the race. It's a technical course over cobbles and tram tracks, and Paolini will have to fend off strong challenges from Ballan, Posthuma (Rabobank) and Roesems (Predictor-Lotto), who are all less than 25 seconds behind him.
