Stunt team 'The Clan' begin search for new female member

Competition winner to join for tour of Scotland in May

Scotland’s Cycle Stunt Team The Clan have launched a competition to find a female stunt cyclist for a tour this May.

One lucky winner will perform with the stunt team at events and schools around Scotland during a three-week stint from 13 May to 3 June. To enter you must be female (of any age – under 16’s subject to conditions), a BMX or mountain bike rider and be available for the whole tour period. The winner will ride their demo rig – which includes a five foot high jump box – and assist in ‘have-a-go activities’ to help inspire the next generation into cycling.

The stunt team, who have performed for over 100,000 people at events around the UK, were formed four years ago by  Danny MacAskill, who has since become one of the best known stunt cyclists in the world.

They have always had female members, and the very first, Lynne Aitchison, will be in charge of selecting the newest recruit. Lynne, who organises the annual women-only ‘Air Maiden’ mountain biking competition, said: “I’ve been involved in The Clan and promoting stunt cycling for women since 2008. The shows are a great way of showing girls that cycling isn’t just for boys it’s great for their self-confidence and even helps give them independence.”

Clan manager Iain Withers told BikeRadar that while the prize was for a one-off event, every rider who has joined the team has gone on to do more demonstrations.

“Having female riders in the team has always been important to us to make sure we inspire young girls, as well as boys, into cycling as a fun activity," he said. "It can be quite a challenge to find female stunt cyclists as relatively few are involved in the extreme side of the sport relative to males. Luckily for us we have had great female role-models involved in the team each year and now we need a new one!”

The winner will receive full training, food and accommodation and a £3,000 fee. Entries are being taken now until 30 April. To enter, contact Clan manager Iain Withers at iain@mb7.com for an entry form.
