Surprise leader after Wildside day one

Favourite Taberlay scuppered by puncture

Daniel McConnell from Victoria was the overall leader after the two-stage opening day of the Pure Tasmania Wildside mountain bike stage race on Saturday.

The 22 year-old McConnell took the lead from Olympian and Tasmanian local Sid Taberlay, 27, after a puncture cost Taberlay 23 minutes in the second stage.

Women’s favourite Rowena Fry, 25, from Launceston, Tasmania had a solid grip on the overall lead at the end of the first day, despite a shaky morning that saw her start the second stage in second place behind fellow Tasmanian Julie Blake.

Stage 1: Cradle Mountain, 16km

In the opening stage near Cradle Mountain, four0time Wildside winner Sid Taberlay from Hobart, Tasmania finished well in front of his competitors easily taking out the stage ahead of 22 year-old Adrian Jackson from Queensland and Victorian Daniel McConnell.

The first stage took riders through fourteen kilometres of alpine forest, rocky tracks and even a river. The last half of the four hundred and fifty strong field finished covered in mud as drizzly wet conditions set in.

Julie Blake was first woman across the line ahead of race favourite Rowena Fry.

Stage 2: Que River, 19km

Australian champion Daniel McConnell from Victoria took the second stage and the overall lead in a stage through the rugged terrain of the Cradle Mountain Link Road area. Race leader Sid Taberlay flatted about half way through, leaving the door open for McConnell, who finished strongly and well ahead of the Olympic champion.

Taberlay said the steep inclines were tough, but he felt confident through the ride and hoped to continue his form ahead of this weekend’s national championships.

After his flat, he slipped from the number one position after the first stage to 57th after the second stage of the event, 23 minutes behind McConnell.

After her second place in the morning stage, Rowena Fry powered to victory in the afternoon leg, putting over five minutes into morning leader Julie Blake to take the overall lead. Fry said she felt strong, despite only just recovering from an illness.
