Sustainable transport charity Sustrans is providing free training for teachers, parents and other school representatives at events being held in England and Scotland today (6th March) to help boost healthy school travel.
In London, members of the charity's Safe Routes to Schools team are linking up with Sustrans' Bike It officers to host a Bike It School Travel Action Day, whilst the Scottish team is holding a similar event in Perth focusing on School Travel Plans.
The training days are part of a wider series of events taking place in England and Scotland this year designed to help schools proactively tackle the school run, promote walking and cycling as a healthy and fun way to get to classes, and find out more about creating and implementing a School Travel Plan.
Similar Action Days have already taken place in England earlier this year in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.
Merryn Preece, Senior Project Officer for Sustrans' Safe Routes to Schools project said: "The Action Days are a wonderful opportunity for schools to gain practical advice on how to get their communities travelling in ways that are good for their health and the environment. As well as learning from each other, they can also find out about valuable resources available from Sustrans and their local authority.
"The guest speakers are always the highlight of the day and inspire and motivate the schools to spring into action. After the Buckinghamshire event, all the schools went away brimming with ideas and raring to start their own School Travel Plans."

Sustrans is always looking for new places to hold these free day-long events, so if you're a local authority or school that'd like to get involved, please contact its School Travel Team on 0117 915 0100.
The Action Days in Scotland are supported by the Scottish Government and the one being held in Perth is the first this year. There is another one taking place in West Dunbartonshire on the 29th April and anyone interested in attending should contact Lynn Marshall on 0131 539 8128 or email email@example.com.
Lynn Marshall, Sustrans' School Travel Project Officer for Scotland, said: "Sustrans has been working with schools throughout Scotland for over 10 years, so we have lots of experience in helping improve the daily journeys of children across the country. These free training days will give representatives the tools they need to start tackling the school run."
