Chocolade Jacques' Frederik Willems won yesterday's opening stage of the Etoile de Bessges, finishing alone after breaking clear of a leading group of 14 on the final climb, 15km from the finish.

Former Mapei espoirs team member Willems clearly brought good form with him from last week's Tour Down Under. He split the leading group on the col de la Gineste, and then held off a group of seven chasers heading into the finish in Marseille.

"The day went very well for us," said Chocolade Jacques DS Walter Planckaert. "When Frederik attacked, Glenn d'Hollander was also there to respond to any counter-attacks. Not only did the stage go well but we've now also got two men who are in good shape for the overall victory on Sunday."
