Quick Step's Bram Tankink took today's opening stage of the Deutschland Tour in Plauen, finishing alone in pouring rain and cold conditions after breaking away from two other riders 17km from the line. Tankink had gone clear after 30km with Saunier Duval's Juan Jos Cobo and Francaise des Jeux's Bernhard Eisel. These two finished in that order 48 seconds behind the winner.

The main peloton, including race favourite Jan Ullrich, was led home three minutes behind Tankink by Crdit Agricole's Sbastien Hinault.
