Tough conditions at round three of Merida Marathon 2009

1,000 riders brave heavy rain in Llanwrtyd Wells

Over 1,000 riders made their way to the smallest town in Britain, Llanwrtyd Wells in Wales, for the third round of the 2009 Merida Bikes MTB Marathon Series powered by MBUK.

Four courses were on offer, with heavy rain on Saturday night making conditions challenging.

The mass start at 10am on Sunday saw the field take on a short road section before plunging onto the extensive local trail network.

The first finisher on the 25km mini marathon came over the line in a super-fast 1hr 38min while the last riders on the full (80km) marathon made it back into the event village after 9hr 2min on the trails.

Llanwrtyd Wells also played host to the first stage of the Gore Bike Wear sportive, where over 100 road riders hit the 50 and 90-mile routes on offer. More information can be found on the Sportive website.

The next Merida Marathon takes place in Selkirk, Scotland. For details, go to: mtb-marathon.co.uk/events/selkirk.php.
